Lilo & Stitch’ beats Tom Cruise and ‘Mission: Impossible’ in record Memorial Day weekend box office

Disney's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch has soared to the top of the box office, setting a new Memorial Day weekend record and surpassing Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

📈 Record-Breaking Debut for Lilo & Stitch

Lilo & Stitch debuted with an impressive $145.5 million domestically over the three-day weekend and is projected to reach $183 million over the four-day holiday period. This achievement breaks the previous Memorial Day weekend record held by Top Gun: Maverick, which earned $160.5 million in 2022.

Globally, the film has amassed $301.2 million, positioning it among Disney's most successful live-action remakes, following The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

🎬 Mission: Impossible Sets Franchise Record

Despite being outpaced by Lilo & Stitch, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning achieved a franchise-best opening with $63 million domestically over three days and an estimated $77 million over the four-day weekend. Worldwide, the film has garnered $190 million, marking the strongest global debut in the Mission: Impossible series.

🎟️ A Historic Memorial Day Weekend

Combined, Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible contributed to a record-setting Memorial Day weekend box office, with total domestic earnings reaching $322 million.

This marks a significant rebound from the previous year's Memorial Day weekend, which saw a total gross of just $132 million, the lowest in nearly three decades.

The success of these films suggests a promising start to the summer movie season, with upcoming releases like Ballerina, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, and Jurassic World Rebirth anticipated to sustain the momentum.
